Manual Lymph Drainage

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a type of gentle oil-free massage which is intended to encourage the natural drainage of the lymph, which carries waste products away from the tissues back toward the heart. The lymph system depends on intrinsic contractions of the smooth muscle cells in the walls of lymph vessels and the movement of skeletal muscles to propel lymph through the vessels to lymph nodes and then beyond the lymph nodes to the lymph ducts which return lymph to the cardiovascular system. The lymphatic system is also intrinsically linked to the immune system.

Manual lymph drainage uses a specific amount of pressure and rhythmic circular movements to stimulate lymph flow.

All our MLD therapists are trained in the Dr Vodder method of manual lymph drainage, which involves a thorough training and regular revisions to stay up-to-date with research and developments.

MLD is the treatment of choice for many conditions due to its decongestive nature, and is also a very relaxing experience.

In certain situations, we may combine it with deep oscillation, a form of pain-free electrotherapy, in particular before and after surgery. Before surgery, clearing the tissues will help with a better result. After surgery, it helps with pain, accelerates healing, and reduces fibrosis and scar tissue. Treatment can be as soon as 2 days after surgery, or as recommended by the surgeon.

People suffering from lymphoedema need a different form of MLD, which is called DLT (Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy). DLT involves measuring of limbs and recommendation of compression garments, as well as MLD treatment.
